The front wheel of Dan Runte's 2014 Harley-Davidson never had a chance against the turning SUV that crossed directly into his path on Friday morning. The 61-year-old monster truck legend was riding eastbound on Osage Street in Pacific, Missouri, when a 40-year-old local man driving a 2020 Chevrolet Traverse attempted a westbound left turn onto Cedar Drive.

The early morning hours of Friday in Pacific, Missouri, brought tragedy that shook the community to its core. Dan Runte, a renowned figure in the monster truck world and an eight-time Monster Truck Driver of the Year, was riding eastbound on Osage Street on his Harley-Davidson motorcycle when his life was suddenly and irrevocably changed.

The front wheel of Runte's 2014 Harley-Davidson was no match for the reckless maneuver of a local driver in a 2020 Chevrolet Traverse. As the SUV crossed directly into Runte’s path, the resulting collision was devastating and swift, leaving little chance for survival.

The incident occurred at the intersection where Osage Street intersects with Cedar Drive. Witnesses reported that the Chevrolet Traverse, driven by a 40-year-old local man, attempted a left turn heading west onto Cedar Drive.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the SUV crossed the intersection directly into the path of Runte’s motorcycle.

The impact was immediate and catastrophic. The front of the motorcycle collided directly with the side of the SUV, causing Runte to be thrown from his bike. The force of the collision was severe enough that Runte was pronounced dead at the scene.

Emergency responders arrived quickly but were unable to save the veteran driver, whose contribution to motorsports and record-breaking stunts had made him a household name among racing and monster truck fans alike.

The driver of the Chevrolet Traverse sustained moderate injuries in the crash. Paramedics transported him to a nearby hospital for treatment, where he remained under observation. Investigators indicated that the driver may have been at fault for the collision, citing the failure to yield or properly navigate the intersection.

Authorities also noted that speed and possible distraction could have played a role, but thorough investigations are ongoing to determine all contributing factors. As the community mourns the loss of a motorsports legend, questions about safety at that intersection and driver responsibility continue to surface.

Dan Runte’s legacy in the monster truck community was monumental.

With decades of experience behind the wheel of the legendary Bigfoot truck, he was known for pushing the boundaries of what was possible in stunt driving and off-road racing.

His record-setting jumps—four times for the longest monster truck jump—earned him worldwide recognition and admiration. Runte's passion and skill had inspired generations of fans and aspiring drivers, and his influence extended beyond the arena to charity events and community gatherings. Many remember him not only for his daring feats but also for his humility and dedication to his craft.

The community’s grief is palpable, with many expressing their condolences and sharing memories of Runte’s remarkable career. His family, friends, and fans are united in mourning the loss of such a talented and beloved figure.

As authorities continue their investigation, the focus remains on ensuring accountability and understanding what led to this tragic accident.
