Michael Raven was asleep in his modest home on the outskirts of Hollow Water First Nation when an unimaginable nightmare shattered his peace. In the predawn hours, an intruder entered his residence and viciously stabbed him, leaving him bloodied and fighting for his life.
His attack was just one of at least eight victims targeted in a series of violent assaults that unfolded across the community before dawn.
The small Anishinaabe community was suddenly thrust into chaos and grief, its residents waking to news of the violence that had struck so close to home.
Among those injured was Jenny Bushie, a resilient woman known for her strength and compassion. Jenny was the mother of Tyrone Simard, a 26-year-old man who was the primary suspect in the string of attacks.
Tragically, Jenny was also the mother of Marina Free Simard, her 18-year-old daughter, whose life was cut short amid the violence.
Marina’s death marked the most heartbreaking outcome of the chaos, leaving her family and community devastated and mourning her loss.
Police quickly responded to the emergency, but the chaos was far from over. Reports indicated that Tyrone fled the scene in a stolen vehicle, attempting to escape justice. However, his flight was short-lived.
During a high-speed chase, Tyrone collided head-on with an RCMP cruiser responding to the scene. The crash was fatal; Tyrone died at the scene, his attempt to flee ending in tragedy.
The aftermath was chaotic and tragic. Six victims, including Michael Raven, were transported to local hospitals by ambulance with injuries ranging from stab wounds to shock.
Two others were airlifted by STARS air ambulance to Winnipeg’s Health Sciences Centre, a major trauma hospital. The hospital immediately issued a mass casualty alert, mobilizing resources to care for the injured and stabilize the situation.
As dawn broke, the small community of Hollow Water gathered in mourning and solidarity. Known for its close bonds and resilience, the community came together to support families and friends affected by the violence.
Vigils and gatherings were held to remember Marina, whose life was extinguished far too soon, and to support the survivors still recovering from their injuries. The loss of Marina Free Simard struck a deep chord within the community, a reminder of the devastating impact of violence.
