The off-road dirt bike lay twisted beside a guardrail on KY Highway 1148, its 30-year-old rider from Thornton already beyond help when first responders arrived at 1:16 a.m. Sunday. Jonathan Stewart had been riding through the early morning darkness between Isom and Polly when wet road conditions caused him to lose control of the vehicle.

The tragic scene unfolded in the quiet hours of early Sunday morning along KY Highway 1148, where a twisted, battered dirt bike lay abandoned beside a guardrail.

The rider, Jonathan Stewart, a 30-year-old man from Thornton, had been riding alone through the darkness between Isom and Polly when tragedy struck.

First responders arrived promptly at 1:16 a.m., but it was immediately clear that Stewart had suffered devastating injuries that no medical intervention could undo. Despite their best efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving a community in shock and mourning.

According to Kentucky State Police Trooper Matt Gayheart, Stewart’s death resulted from a high-impact collision with the metal barrier. The preliminary investigation indicates that wet road conditions played a significant role in the accident.

The slick surface likely caused Stewart to lose control of his off-road dirt bike, which then veered sharply and collided forcefully with the guardrail. The force of the impact was severe enough to instantly end his life, with authorities confirming that Stewart was not wearing protective headgear at the time of the crash.

This detail has added to the ongoing discussion about safety measures, especially given the dangers of riding in low visibility and adverse weather conditions.

Emergency crews from Hazard’s Post 13 responded swiftly to the distress call, finding Stewart lying motionless near his damaged motorcycle. The scene was somber, with the twisted bike serving as a stark reminder of the dangers inherent in off-road riding and nighttime travel on potentially hazardous roads.

An extensive investigation is underway as Trooper Kevin Day continues to examine all aspects of the incident, including environmental factors and Stewart’s riding behavior.

Toxicology tests are also pending, which may provide further insights into whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash, although no such details have been confirmed at this stage.

The Letcher County Coroner’s Office officially pronounced Stewart dead at the scene. His family and friends are devastated by the loss, and community members are expressing their condolences and sympathies through various channels.

Stewart was remembered as a dedicated rider and a beloved individual within his local community, known for his kindness and friendly nature.

His sudden passing leaves a void for those who knew him, highlighting the importance of safety and caution when engaging in high-risk activities such as off-road riding, especially during hazardous weather conditions.

As investigations continue, authorities are urging riders to take extra precautions, wear appropriate protective gear, and exercise caution during adverse weather.

The community mourns the loss of Jonathan Stewart, whose life was tragically cut short in a moment of darkness and wet roads.

Our thoughts remain with his family and friends during this profoundly difficult time, and we hope that lessons learned from this tragedy will promote safer riding practices in the future.
