The flames had already swallowed the wreckage by the time rescue crews reached the field. Ken Shaffer’s Cessna 172 crashed just outside Goheen Airport shortly after 1 p.m. Friday, hitting the ground hard enough to tear apart the fuselage before fire took over. Clark-Cowlitz Fire Rescue arrived within seven minutes and put out the blaze, but Shaffer was found dead.

The tragedy unfolded swiftly and devastatingly on a quiet Friday afternoon. Just after 1 p.m., Ken Shaffer’s small aircraft, a Cessna 172, plummeted from the sky just outside Goheen Airport, crashing with a force that shattered the fuselage and ignited a fierce fire.

Witnesses nearby reported seeing the plane spiral downward suddenly, then erupt into flames upon impact, turning the scene into a smoldering wreckage before rescue crews could arrive.

By the time Clark-Cowlitz Fire Rescue reached the site, only minutes after the call was dispatched, the flames had already consumed most of the wreckage. Their crews fought the blaze aggressively, finally bringing it under control within seven minutes. Tragically, amidst the charred remains of the plane, they found the body of Ken Shaffer, the sole occupant, who did not survive the crash. No other individuals were on board, offering some solace amid the grief.

Early reports from witnesses and preliminary site inspections point towards a possible stall or spin event, a dangerous maneuver that can occur suddenly in small aircraft, especially under certain conditions. However, officials caution that it is too early to conclusively determine the cause. Weather conditions appeared stable during the incident, and investigators indicate that no apparent weather-related factors contributed to the crash, focusing attention instead on pilot technique, mechanical issues, or other unforeseen circumstances.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched a thorough investigation into the crash. Their teams are now examining the wreckage, analyzing flight data, and interviewing witnesses to piece together what led to this tragic end. Meanwhile, the Clark County Sheriff’s Office has secured the area, ensuring that evidence remains undisturbed as investigators work diligently to uncover the truth.

Ken Shaffer’s passing marks a profound loss to his family, friends, and the local aviation community. His loved ones are left to grapple with grief, mourning the sudden and untimely loss of someone they cherished. In moments like these, the community’s support and condolences are vital, providing comfort amid the sorrow.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the inherent risks involved in aviation, even for experienced pilots. Small aircraft like the Cessna 172, often used for training, recreation, or local travel, require constant vigilance and respect for the unpredictable nature of flight. While flying remains a beloved hobby and a vital mode of transportation, safety remains paramount, and investigations like this aim to prevent future tragedies.

As the authorities continue their work, they appeal to witnesses who might have additional information or insights about the flight or the crash site. Every detail could help clarify the sequence of events and contribute to a comprehensive understanding of what transpired.

In honoring Ken Shaffer’s memory, the community extends deepest condolences to his loved ones. His absence leaves a void in their lives, yet his passion for flying and the memories shared will be treasured. As the investigation unfolds, the hope is that lessons learned from this tragedy will enhance safety protocols and prevent such heartbreak from recurring in the future.

For now, the focus remains on mourning a life lost too soon, supporting those left behind, and seeking answers that may bring some measure of closure in the wake of this heartbreaking accident.
